Burnt Capacitor in Bore Start Box

At this Ellenbrook job our specialist water bore electrician Dave found that the capacitor in the bore start box had ruptured. The client had called us on 9246 0111 when their water bore stopped working.

When our Ellenbrook client reported their bore wasn’t working we talked to them on the phone and asked a few questions to determine who was the best person to send.

As you will see pictured the start box cover was damaged by the burnt out capacitor. After we replaced the capacitor and start box we tested the motor electrically and all was OK. Our electrician carries a meggar tester specifically to send a signal down to the submersible pump motor and back up again to test it against known benchmarks.

Water bore start capacitor problem

We often get water bore repair calls where the problem turns out to be the start capacitor. Call on 9246 0111.

In a single phase submersible bore pump the start capacitor is ordinarily in the 240 volt start box. Three phase submersible pumps do not have start capacitors. In some centrifugal pumps the capacitor can be mounted externally on the pump motor housing. It is surprising how often a faulty capacitor is missed as the cause of a bore pump problem particularly when tests are carried out by someone who is not specifically experienced in bore pump service work. Even trained general electricians can misdiagnose this simple problem.

Often a capacitor problem can spotted visually as it will commonly swell or rupture. A start capacitor should be perfectly cylindrical. Sometimes though a faulty capacitor can only be diagnosed by the serviceman actually testing it when disconnected. As the start box is mains powered it does need a licensed electrician or certified electrical worker to test and replace the start capacitor. Our specialist bore electrician Dave is expert at this.

Burnt start capacitor Ballajura

This week we got a call to our Perth bore service team from a customer in Ballajura.
He said he switched his submersible water bore on and the box on the wall made a noise, the bore stopped and smoke started coming out of the box.
Our bore electrician attended and, as suspected, the start capacitor had blown.

The capacitor was quite burnt as evidenced in these pictures. This one was a 40 micrtofarad start run capacitor operating a 1.1kw submersible Sumoto pump motor.

Our electrician replaced the capacitor for the Ballajura customer from stock we carry in the van. The electrician also fixed the affected connections and this Ballajura water bore was up and running again with the customer all smiles.
