Pat lives in Greenwood and her RCD (Residual Current Device) switch was tripping.  (It was the RCD rather than the circuit breaker tripping ) Who did she call? Us on 9246 0111.

We sent out our experienced bore electrician, Dave.

The first thing he did was test the submersible water bore motor and it tested OK. There was one RCD that protected all power points on two circuits with the pump on the power circuit.

Bore was tripping when retic ran.

Pat told us that when station 3 was on the RCD tripped. Dave noticed there was a broken sprinkler right near the bore head washing out sand.

He exposed the bore head and it was filled with sand which he dug out by hand. Sand should not cover the top of a submersible bore for a variety of reasons. It can drop down inside the bore casing and as it is pumped back out it will prematurely wear  out the pump impellers. It can also play havoc with solenoid valves in the retic system.

But why was this bore tripping?

As Dave dig down he exposed the electrical junction box that joined the cables up from the pump with those going towards the house. It appears that as the sand got wet from the broken sprinkler the moisture was getting in to the less than perfect electrical junction box and causing the bore RCD to trip. Upon removing the sand and retesting all worked OK.  It has been noted though that the j box will need replacing and raising whenever the submersible motor is replaced.

The customer’s  2 wire submersible motor was completely seized, when running it was drawing over 42 amps. It was a totally manual operation with plugs into an adjacent water proof power point which is fed by its’s own circuit breaker/RCD in meter box. All the other bore electrics tested OK.

So we returned to fit new barrel union, new cable down hole and new submersible pump wet-end.

Burnt Capacitor in Bore Start Box

At this Ellenbrook job our specialist water bore electrician Dave found that the capacitor in the bore start box had ruptured. The client had called us on 9246 0111 when their water bore stopped working.

When our Ellenbrook client reported their bore wasn’t working we talked to them on the phone and asked a few questions to determine who was the best person to send.

As you will see pictured the start box cover was damaged by the burnt out capacitor. After we replaced the capacitor and start box we tested the motor electrically and all was OK. Our electrician carries a meggar tester specifically to send a signal down to the submersible pump motor and back up again to test it against known benchmarks.
