What is a submersible pump?

Assembling a submersible pump
Assembling a submersible pump

People often get confused about what is a submersible pump. A picture tells
a thousand words.

Most Perth garden bores use a 1.1 kilowatt (1.5 horsepower), 1.5kw (2 hp) or
2.2kw (3 hp) submersible motor connected to a matching pump or more
correctly a matching “wet-end”. Where the confusion comes in is generally
people refer to the two units combined as a pump. Here our bore service man
has assembled a single phase motor to a 12 stage pump (wet-end ). The motor
is the bottom part furthest from his hand. The wet end is the part he is
gripping whilst he tightens the fitting where the rising 40mm poly pipe
mainline will be connected to deliver the water to the surface. Note the
black rubberized bore cable is connected to the blue lead connected to the
motor. This delivers the 240v power down the borehole to the motor. The
stainless wire is used to support the weight of everything down the bore
hole.

New submersible water bore at South Perth units

Today we attended a block of very nice units in South Perth with a lovely idyllic garden.  However their yearly water bill is $5,000 and that is why they are installing a new submersible bore – to save money! 9246 0111

Our new bore installation team at Virgin Bores are putting in a submersible water bore which will be drilled to 22 metres. The new bore will be connected to the existing automatic reticulation system. Our electrician will interface the existing retic controller to start the bore via a 24 V relay. The submersible bore will be hidden under the lawn.

The unit owners will enjoy free water to keep their gardens greener and under Perth water rostering because they have a water bore will be able to water three days a week instead of the two days a week allowed on mains water. Bore drilling in South Perth requires specialist knowledge and local experience because of the proximity to the river on two sides.

You can get more informationon water bores on our main website HERE or call 9246 0111 if you require a bore quote in any Perth suburb.

New Submersible water bore Coolbinia

There are many very deep old wells in Mt Lawley and Coolbinia. If they are not working ring us on 9246 0111 and we will try and talk you through a solution.

Often these old wells have a decades old with centrifugal pumps at the bottom of 15 or so metre well with a rickety old ladder. Beneath the pump is often an old galvanized pipe going down a further 5 to 10 metres. This pipe or spear is also often on the verge of collapse. If the well is too deep we may have an issue repairing because of safety issues but we can advise you about that when you call. Interestingly, some of the old wells in established suburbs were dug by the home owners many years ago.

After years of band-aid solutions, as was the case of our client in Coolbinia, it was time for a modern submersible water bore. In this case access was restricted but we managed to back our drilling rig so the drilling platform extended over the low front wall.

Once the bore box pictured here is covered over the new submersible bore will provide years of reliable service operating silently and invisbly deep beneath the lawn.

We have drilled many submersible water bores in the Coolbinia and Mount Lawley area. If we can help you please call us on 9246 0111 or visit our website on HERE

Replace reticulation controller Carine

Total Eden had passed on a reticulation repair job for a customer in Carine, a suburb of Perth. Thanks to the Carine customer for the great review on the job we did for her.

The customer had a bore and their reticulation controller was faulty. One of our retic service team confirmed the reticulation controller needed to be replaced and we replaced the controller the next day. It was a standard outdoor model with built-in transformer.

Submersible Water Bore Myaree

What is under here? A modern submersible water bore that is saving the householder money. Unlike the old well type water bores with the large tin lids, this water bore is not conspicuous and runs silently.

This submersible water bore was drilled recently by our drilling team at the home of a customer in Myaree, a southern Perth suburb. The bore lid was finished flush with a new aggregate driveway. We generally drill in lawns or gardens but here there was no other possible place to drill.

Water Bore Subiaco

Modern submersible water bores have come along way. Now-a-days submersible garden bores are silent and invisible…a far cry from Subiaco’s new bore installed in 1901.

It was interesting to learn about the history of this very early water bore in the Subiaco area.

It was described as “positively cruel to keep that engine going at night” and “the Presbyterian people have succeeded in having it stopped during divine service”

If you have never thought about getting a water bore but would like to save some money and look after your garden by being able to water three days a week during summer do some reading on our website.

Water Bore Quote Leederville

Virgin Bores was quoting on a new submersible water bore in West Leederville when we spotted this fantastic recycling with an old mattress frame / springs used to make a vertical garden.

Great recycling with a vertical garden made mattress springs

It makes a perfect frame for the plants to climb on. These plants will flourish with a new submersible water bore and the nutrient rich Perth bore water. The Perth coastal plain is generally ideal for bore water. Unlike the old fashioned wells with the tin lids a modern submersible bore is invisible and silent. It lasts and will save you money. Also with a water bore you can water your garden three days a week instead of two on mains water. Obviously you only water when needed.

Automation of Old Well

This old well with a tin lid has been running without a retic controller. We are going to automate this old well in Morley.

We will fit an automatic reticulation controller and interface to the clients existing on/off switch. We then replace the manual bore valves (in the foreground of the picture) with automatic solenoid valves.

Hey presto, it will come on automatically and switch from front to rear lawns and it is fully programmable.

If we can help you with a similar issue or anything to do with your bore or reticulation contact one of our friendly team on 9246 0111 or go to our website HERE

Lowara bore pump problem in Perth?

Lowara bore start box

Lowara submersible pumps and motors are a good reliable Italian brand but, like anything, they can have their own idiosyncracies. We specialise in servicing Lowara submersible pumps and their stablemates, Centripro and Marlow. We have over a decade of practical in-the-field service and pump repair experience. A problem that does from time to time present itself with some of the earlier Lowara single phase motors is blown start capacitors in the bore start box. It is an easy fix for someone experienced in Lowara pumps and motors. Give our Perth bore service and repair hotline a call on 1300 734 300 and our mobile bore service team can help you. Or visit or main Virgin Bores website for more bore info and help.

Bore light stays on?

Familiar call today from a lady who happened to live in Sorrento, but we get similar calls from bore owners all over Perth. “the light on my bore box on the wall has stayed on even after I have turned the reticulation controller off “.  This can turn in to a bigger problem so first things first, if you are reading this blog and your bore box light is on but there is no water pumping out anywhere please straight away turn the bore mains power off.  Turn it off by either turning off the circuit breaker ( or pulling the fuse) labelled “bore” or “pump” that you will hopefully see in your meter box. Or turn off the bore box isolation switch that is located on the bore box on the wall. ( this is called a bore start box, not to be confused with the reticulation controller). Worst case if you can’t turn it by either of these two methods then turn off your mains power master switch and call us pronto on 1300 734 300.

Lowara bore start box

What has most likely happened is that your automatic reticulation controller has correctly sent the 24 volt start signal to the relay in the bore start box and this has started the 240v bore at the same time as the reticulation controller has correctly sent a signal to open a solenoid valve allowing water to flow to the sprinklers. All good so far but then when the automatic reticulation controller has run through its cycle and shut the last solenoid valve the pump has continued to run. Most likely the start relay has stuck on and needs replacing. Prolonged operation of any bore pump with no water being able to flow (dead heading ) can cause a multitude of problems. Most commonly with submersible pumps the rising poly mainline will overheat and “blow”. With centrifugal well pumps overheating leads to several serious problems.
